Beyond the Tourist Trail
Understanding Temples and Gardens
Photographing JapanMy name is Geoffrey, a French guide and professional photographer based in Japan since 2013, following my first stay in 2009.
Specialising in Kyoto, Osaka and Nara, I have guided thousands of travellers over the years, both privately and for respected travel agencies.
With me, there are no rehearsed speeches and no need to spend the day with your head buried in a guidebook. Every tour is private, shaped around your interests and enjoyed in a spontaneous, relaxed atmosphere—as if someone you know were showing you their Japan. A detail of daily life, a neighbourhood or a monument can become the starting point for understanding the country through a passionate yet realistic perspective, beyond the usual clichés.
More than ten years of exploration have enabled me to create original, seamless itineraries that connect each stop logically, minimise travel time and keep the day flowing naturally. I take care of the planning and adjust the route in real time according to the weather, local events and your pace. An inviting shop catches your eye? You want to stay longer somewhere? Nothing is set in stone.
Depending on your trip, we can focus on the essential sights, venture entirely off the beaten path or find the perfect balance between the two. As a photographer-guide, I also share my favourite viewpoints and practical tips, even if you only have a smartphone. And if temples, shrines or gardens intrigue you, I provide the historical, religious and aesthetic context needed not simply to see them, but truly to understand them.
